Why This Exists

Most career advice for engineers is loud and opinionated.

"Hustle harder. Learn this new tool. Fix these problems with yourself. Get to Staff by 30. Earn 6 figures."

But those who thrive long-term do things differently.

They work with intention. They think clearly. They lean into their own personal strengths. They grow, without burning out.

That’s what The Quiet Engineer is all about.

What You’ll Find

For engineers who want to grow without losing themselves.

Each week, I share focused, practical insights on:

  • Career clarity – How to grow effectively and sustainably, as an IC or leader

  • Calm productivity – How to protect your time, focus, and attention whilst being the most productive you have ever been.

  • Quiet leadership – How to lead, mentor, and influence without changing who you are.

No hype. No noise. Just honest thinking and advice to help you get better at what you do and how you do it.

Free posts weekly. Paid posts dive deeper with templates, guides, and systems.

Who I Am

Hi, I’m James.

I’ve worked in tech for over a decade - starting as a self-taught frontend engineer, then moving into leadership at companies like Monzo,MoonPay, and Zerion.

A few things about me:

  • I’m a career changer - from construction sites to code.

  • I’m fiercely introverted, but proud of being a quiet person (hence the name).

  • Joined the engineering team at Monzo when it was considered the "most desirable startup in the UK".

  • I helped lead through a $555M Series A at MoonPay, growing the team from 40 to 300+.

What I’ve learned: real growth doesn’t come from being the loudest - it comes from clarity, focus, and consistency.

This is the goal of The Quiet Engineer.
